GRANUAUILE TRAIL no. 9 : Bunowen Bay and the Hill of Doon

Written by Anne Chambers.

Bunowen Bay and the Hill of Doon, Ballyconeely, in the Barony of Ballinahinch, Connemara.

In 1546 Grace O'Malley married Donal O'Flaherty, chieftain of the barony of Ballinahinch and tanaist to the senior O'Flaherty chieftain of Connemara. Donal's castle of Bunowen was situated close to the ruined 18th century MacGeogegan Castle, the family that later displaced Grace's O'Flaherty grandson from his ancestral lands during the Cromwellian confiscations of the 17th century.

Grace had three children with Donal viz. Owen, Murrough and a daughter named Margaret

In 1564 Donal died in a tribal dispute with the Joyce Clan clan on whom Grace extracted her revenge by seizing their castle in Lough Corrib.
